Why acquiring Kyrie Irving would be a massive mistake for the Dallas Mavericks

Dallas Mavericks, Kyrie Irving

History suggests no matter where Irving lands this summer, he is not likely to stay long.

Kyrie did spend his first six NBA seasons in Cleveland, but he did not have much choice. The Cavaliers got the number one pick to acquire him, and they missed the playoffs in his first four years before LeBron James returned in 2014. He was not about to leave just as they were becoming a contender, and Irving then asked for a trade after three straight trips to the NBA Finals.

It only took two years in Boston before Kyrie left in free agency to play with Kevin Durant in Brooklyn. Now, the 6’2 guard could be on the move again. Irving wants a long-term deal, but that does not mean he will see out the contract.

The Mavericks do not want to find themselves in the Nets’ situation. Brooklyn just traded a massive haul of draft picks to the Rockets to acquire James Harden only for him to ask out just one year later. What if Kyrie does that to Dallas? It could set the Mavs back significantly at an important time in Luka Doncic’s career.

On top of that, Kyrie Irving coming to Dallas would be costly, and that alone should scare the Dallas Mavericks.
