Roebling Bridge shut down due to ‘suspicious package’; third closure in less than a week

The Roebling Bridge has reopened after being shut down for the third time in less than a week. The bridge was shut down Monday around 3:38 p.m. for a “report of a suspicious package” according to police. According to Covington Police and Fire, crews checked the bag and determined there was no threat inside. After taking a closer look, crews determined the bag contained bedding. The bridge has been determined to be safe and is now reopened to foot and vehicle traffic.Anyone with information is asked to call Cincinnati/NKY Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040. It was the third time the bridge has been shut down in less than a week.The first time it happened was last Wednesday, when Covington police said a call came into Kenton County Dispatch around 5:23 a.m. in which a bomb threat was made, specifically threatening the Roebling Bridge, from an unknown person.Officials say the person making the call demanded money, including an amount upwards of $400,000, and threatened to shoot law enforcement in addition to bomb the Roebling with pipe bombs.Authorities say the bridge was closed and a thorough check was done. No devices were located.Covington police say the threat was found to not be credible.Then on Sunday, officials shut down the bridge to investigate another threat. Kenton County and Covington police did not detail the nature of the threat, other than describing it as involving a possible pipe bomb. Officers from Cincinnati and northern Kentucky police agencies responded using K9 and other resources to search the 157-year-old bridge from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The all-clear was given just after the 1 p.m. Bengals kickoff, but the investigation remains ongoing, with officers on both sides of the river taking the threat seriously.
