There’s Something About Mary actress Markie Post has died aged 70 after a three-year battle with cancer.

The sad news was confirmed to by her longtime manager Ellen Lubin Sanitsky.

Her family said in a statement: “Our pride is in who she was in addition to acting; a person who made elaborate cakes for friends, sewed curtains for first apartments and showed us how to be kind, loving and forgiving in an often harsh world.”

She is believed to have been battling cancer for three years prior to her death and refused to stop working even though she was sick.

The brave star continued acting and managed to complete a number of film and TV projects in between her chemotherapy treatments.

Markie will be best known to fans for playing Cameron Diaz’s onscreen mum in hit comedy film There’s Something About Mary.

She was born in Palo Alto, California and began her career with roles behind the scenes, working on shows including Alex Trebek’s Double Dare as an associate producer.

Markie also landed a job as a card dealer on NBC show Card Sharks.

She moved into acting in the late 1970s with roles in The Incredible Hulk, The Lazarus Syndrome and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

In the 1980s, she landed a recurring role on The Fall Guy – starring in 65 episodes before going on to star in Night Court as lawyer Christine Sullivan.

In later years, she appeared in Scrubs as the mother of Dr. Elliot Reid, and she played herself in an episode of 30 Rock which reassembled the cast of Night Court.

But Markei is noted for her appearance in 1998 comedy movie There’s Something About Mary.

She played Cameron Diaz’s onscreen mother Mary in the hit film.

After being diagnosed with cancer, Markie kept on working and she completed projects between treatment including Lifetime Christmas movie Four Christmases and a Wedding and TV series The Kids Are Alright.

She is survived by her writer husband Michael A. Ross and their daughters, Kate Armstrong Ross and Daisy Schoenborn.
