This development comes hours after sources said the Padres were close to acquiring three-time Cy Young winner Scherzer but other teams, including the Dodgers, were still trying to top the Padres’ offer.
As a player with 10 years of MLB service and five with the same team, Scherzer has 10-5 rights to veto any trade.
If the Dodgers complete a deal with the Nationals, Washington would get right-handed pitcher Josiah Gray, Triple-A catcher Keibert Ruiz, Double-A pitcher Gerardo Carrillo and Double-A outfielder Donovan Casey, a source confirmed.
Scherzer, who turned 37 on Tuesday, is 8-4 this season with a 2.76 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 111 innings. He pitched six innings, allowing one run and striking out five, in the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Phillies.
An eight-time All-Star who helped lead the Nationals to a 2019 World Series win against the Houston Astros, Scherzer is in the final season of a seven-year, $210 million contract he signed in 2015 after five seasons with the Detroit Tigers. Among active pitchers, Scherzer was fourth in wins above replacement (62.3), seventh in ERA (3.19) and second in strikeouts (2,926) entering Thursday.
Turner — who tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced Tuesday — leads the Nationals in batting average (.322), hits (125), runs scored (66), stolen bases (21) and wins above replacement (4.0) this season. The first-time All-Star is currently sidelined.
Gray, 23, who entered the season as the Dodgers’ top prospect, made his MLB debut on July 20. He has a 6.75 ERA in eight innings over two appearances, striking out 13.
Ruiz, the Dodgers’ No. 4 prospect entering the season, is hitting .311 with 16 home runs in 52 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City. Carrillo, 22, was the team’s No. 20 prospect coming into 2021 and has a 4.25 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) this season. Casey, 25, is hitting .296 with 11 home runs and 15 steals in 73 games.
