Caltrans shuts down Highway 1 in Watsonville due to flooding

Both directions of Highway 1 in the Watsonville area were closed Sunday morning due to flooding, officials said.Video Player: Our latest forecast. The highway closure is between Salinas Road in Monterey County and Highway 129 also known as Riverside Drive in Watsonville.Southbound traffic is being diverted onto Highway 129, the California Highway Patrol said. Drivers going northbound are being diverted at Salinas Road. Drivers in the area are being asked to avoid all non-essential driving. At this time there is no estimate on when the road will reopen.The levee failed in the early morning hours of Saturday, flooding the community of Pajaro and neighboring ag fields in the Watsonville area. Nicholas Pasculli with Montery County said water levels from the breach have not receded as of Sunday morning. Hundreds of people were evacuated over the weekend and more than 90 had to be rescued by first responders. No injuries or deaths have been reported.Curtis Rhodes with Cal Fire said more residents have become trapped as water levels continue to rise on Sunday. His drone team was out flying on Hudson Landing road, which was clear last night but is now completely impassable stranding residents.
