Florida mom left toddler at hospital with strangers, cops say

A Florida mother was arrested after abandoning her 2-year-old daughter at a hospital, police said.

Carolina Vizcarra, 33, left her 2-year-old daughter at Miami’s Mercy Hospital on Tuesday with two strangers — including an off-duty plainclothes Miami cop — while asking if they could watch her as she went to the bathroom, police said.

Vizcarra, of North Miami, also gave the cop her daughter’s Social Security card before walking away, according to an arrest report obtained by The Post.

“You don’t have to do this,” the unidentified witness told Vizcarra while following her, police said.

“Leave me alone,” Vizcarra responded as she exited the hospital, according to the arrest report.

Miami police tweeted a photo of the girl, who appeared to be in good health, clutching a teddy bear later Tuesday afternoon. Department officials were seeking help from the public to track down the girl’s relatives as she remained in the custody of child welfare officials.

Cops also issued an alert for officers to be on the lookout for Vizcarra. Later Tuesday, detectives got a call indicating she was at the hospital looking for her daughter, according to the arrest report.

The caller described the black shirt and black leggings that Vizcarra had been wearing earlier in the day. Cops returned to the hospital and arrested her for felony child abandonment, police said.

“It’s not like I just left her,” Vizcarra told the officer, according to her arrest report. “It’s a hospital and I was worried for her. I was thinking I am about to sleep on the streets, but not her.”

It’s unclear who will eventually gain custody of Vizcarra’s daughter, WPLG reported.

“She hands off this child to this unknown man,” Miami Police Officer Kenia Fallat told the station. “Luckily he was a police officer and what was going through his mind as he went into police mode.”

The officer “immediately called for help” after the girl was left behind. Investigators are reviewing hospital surveillance footage, WPLG reported.

“We want to know what her mental state was,” Fallat said. “We want to know what she was thinking when she was handing off her child to this unknown man.”

State law protects parents who leave children at hospitals, fire stations or emergency medical locations, but only if they’re newborns up to a week old, WPLG reported.
